International Flying Dutchman Class

400th Anniversary of New Amsterdam Championships

First Regatta

September 7-10, 2009

With challenging winds, current and local traffic, part 1 of the NY400 FD Championship completed after two days of racing.  The third day of racing for the first regatta was canceled on Thursday due to 30+kt winds on New York Harbor. This resulted in first place for the van der Pol brothers,  Bas and Marc of the Netherlands.

Final results are here

Many thanks to Rene A Sosa, a local sailing coach, for the pictures on this page and also for making all these photos available for our use as well.

Richard Phillips took all these shots while serving time on the Committee Boat.  Well Done, Richard!

And we had PhotoBoat out cruising for all these professional shots.  More close ups, nicely organized.

No sailing is scheduled on Friday in commemoration of September 11.  Saturday starts the final series of the NY400 FD event, with closing ceremonies and participation in the flotillas on Sunday.

50th Anniversary Cannonball

Regatta

June 18th- 21st, 2009

Lin Robson along with Mike Coe successfully defended his National Champion title at the combined FD Nationals and 50th Anniversary Cannonball Regatta.  There were four days of cooler, wetter and more challenging than usual racing as Canandaigua Lake dished up some conditions that rewarded very close attention to the dramatically different conditions over the race course, and very consistently chastised those who did not! Canandaigua Yacht Club put on a fabulous 50th Anniversary celebration dinner that included many luminaries from past Cannonball regattas.

Results are here and photos are here.

New York 400 Practice Regatta

May 30-31, 2009

The New York 400 Practice Regatta turned out to be a very useful regatta for both competitors and Race Committee.    We had 6 boats and a full RC show up to get a handle on New York Harbor and to work out the logistics and issues for the main event to be held in September.  A westerly breeze generally provided trapezing conditions on Saturday although course layout sailing across the harbor would be a challenge for the full fleet and alternate plans were devised.  Sunday's breeze was more southerly and closer to the breeze expected in September providing more course options.  The weekend was excellent experience for the RC who worked through a number of issues away from their home port.  Plus some local race management expertise arrived on Sunday to help work through other issues.  The commercial and pleasure boat traffic was a bit of a challenge, although solutions were readily available.  Tidal currents reinforced by the Hudson River were a significant consideration, although not as significant as, say, San Francisco Bay or Lee-On-Solent!

Newcomers Willem Sandberg and Maarten Eenkema van Dijk, fresh from their 420 circuit showed excellent speed and teamwork for their first FD regatta.  Also, new members Chris Liberti and Katie Coupland from the University of Rhode Island FD fleet also came down and learned some new tricks.  Lin Robson came up from Florida to drive USA 251 and helped work through the issues.  Results, conditions and more photos here.  Additional NY400 info is here and also here

New York 400 Practice Regatta

May 30-31, 2009

Dear All in the International FD, 505 and 470 Classes in North America ,

It is a pleasure to advise you that, in preparation for two major Flying Dutchman Championships we will be hosting in New York Harbor, at the Statue of Liberty in September 2009 (to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of New Amsterdam which was established in 1609 when Henry Hudson discovered Manhattan) we will be holding a Practice Race in the same – spectacular but unusual and difficult – waters to make sure the RC and everything works as it should on the big days in September, when we expect 80 FDs on the line (60 of which are coming over from the FD Worlds in Medemblik in August - compliments of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) from at least 12 nations.

The practice race is going to be the weekend of May 30 and 31 and we are aiming to keep the fleet small (15 or 20 boats). Because the bulk of the FD fleet these days is on the West Coast, we may not get to that number with just the FDs from the East Coast, so we decided to also invite 505s and 470s, to make sure we have a fun field together.

Notice of Race and Entry Form for the Practice Race for FD, 505, and 470.

Entry form required by April 30, 2009!

Because, as I said, we want to keep the fleet relatively small, entries will be granted on a first co me first served basis and the Organizing Authority reserves the right to limit entries at no more than 20 or so. So, if you want to race in this truly unique venue, right at the Statue of Liberty, I suggest you sign up very quickly.

With best regards,

Jhr. Job B. B. Sandberg
