FD News  19  OCTOBER 2005

NOTICE: Due to the very high probability of Hurricane WILMA impacting
the Gulf coast of Florida this weekend, US FD Nationals has been postponed.

The Saint Petersburg Yacht Club and IFDCAUS have reached an agreement today that the 2005 FD Nationals will be sailing in January of 2006. The format will be expanded back out to three days of racing for the FD class, with measurement and registration taking place on Thursday Jan 26th.
A new NOR will be released by SPYC shortly.

FD sailors around St. Pete are planning some training dates probably in December. There is also considerable interest in participating in the St.Petersburg NOOD regatta which is usually held in late February or early March. contact the editor for more information on these sailing opportunities.

FD News  03 OCTOBER 2005

The FD class has withdrawn from the American Yacht Club High Performance Dinghy Regatta this coming weekend, October 8-10 in Rye, NY, due to lack of participation. FD sailors in the metro New York area, of which there are several,  should communicate more among themselves and take advantage of racing opportunitues.

In Atlanta on that same weekend at the Barefoot sailing club on Lake Lanier at least four FD teams are planning to attend the Barefoot Open regatta. contact Bruce Barrett if you would like to attend this event (appologies for the lateness of this announcement). It's a three day event, starting friday October 7th.

Last weekend, October 1-2 the up-state and New England crown mustered seven boats at Saratoga SC . The Gorbolds won the event overall though consistancy though the four races were won by four different teams.

Doug McWilliams has presented the Northern California fleet with a draft  West Coast Racing Calender for the next 18 months. Comments are invited contact Zhenya .

St Pete YC has posted the NOR for Midwinters in January pdf Observe that it is to be a two day event this year, at the request of the the other classes. We expect a larger than usual turn out for Midwinters this year because a fair number of FD sailors fron the north are planning to overwinter their boats in St  Pete and fly down for midwinters.

There has been alot of FD racing around the US this summer. The usual run of region I regattas, several new venues in California, MAryland, Kingston, Ontario and elsewhere. there are reported in the latest issue of Trapeze.

This is issue # 150 of Trapeze. Issue number one, a single, type written, two sided legal sheet appeared in 1955, some 50 years ago now. IFDCAUS is proud of its long sustained tradition of collecting and publishing its history and as always invites the public to subscribe and is always glad to see contributions from anyone with current or historical information about FD sailing.

Regatta Reports

concord burgee
Dutch Treat regatta, Concord YC, Knoxville TN May 20-21
For the firts time in more than 30 years FDs took part in the Dutch Treat regatta, in Tennessee. Five teams appeared made up of sailors from as far away as Massachusetts and Forida. Three races were held in light shifty winds. Four of the teams included at least one sailor from the local Thistle Fleet. In fact, after the end of the FD racing at noon on Sunday, a bunch of the FD sailors jumped into Thistles and raced in the aftenoon club races. The Windmill class had good turn out of about 14 boats. Some of these folks are friends whom we have met in St. Petersburg at the midwinter regatta in recent years.
The winner of the the FD class in the event was Randy Schonagen who sails a beautiful 1965 double bottom Doesburg FD. He has an ancient mitre cut Elvstrom genoa and small spinnaker which is bag launched, but the boat is fast, and he and Todd knows their lake.

On the same weekend six FD teams joined the I-14 class at the Bay View Boat Club in San Francisco for the BVBC Spring Regatta. This was a heavy air event typical of this time of year on the Bay and not many of the boats completed all the races. The I-14's show were an amazing sight also, at one leward mark every single one of them capsized, one after the other.

On June 11-12 some FD sailors from the San Francisco area met at Lake Elizabeth, CA. Four boats put in and races were held boat saturday and sunday by the local sailing club. Art and Naim won most of the races, and Zhenya with new sailor Peter Muny finished 2nd overall. The winds were lakey and shifty as is to be expected, and Art Lange demonstrated his expertise in these conditions.

Lake Huntington FD regatta July 9-10

Why Huntington?

I interviewed a few people at Whiskeytown for some background on sailing at Lake Huntington. For openers, I spoke to well over a dozen people,  and ALL OF THEM were VERY enthusiastic about Huntington! And most of these people were from Oregon, by the way!

First, some facts: The lake itself is a long, narrow lake at about 7200 feet in altitude, so you should remember to bring liquids, and possibly acclimate yourself to the altitude. The wind is extremely reliable, between ten and fifteen mph, and typically showing up at ten in the morning, and shutting off at five in the evening, like clockwork. In fact, one person commented on how last year the wind was late: it showed up at eleven o'clock!

The venue is beautiful, with a general store, log cabin lodgings, a restaurant, a log cabin style bar, and plenty of good camping (Deer Creek is recommended, the RV campground is NOT recommended.) However, the RV showers are recommended (not the showers in the RVs, the showers in the RV campground!)

The Race Committee runs the windward/leeward races from onshore, in a tent near the beach, so the event is Very spectator friendly. Other friends have recommended pitching your beach chairs over at 'Spinnaker Point', and watch the spinnakers on their leeward legs.

The event is very popular, so you should expect crowded start lines, a crowded racecourse, and lots of boats generally. One person mentioned that Huntington is all about 'lane management' - i.e. keeping clean air. He recommended starting on starboard, heading over towards the Boy Scout camp along the left hand shore. The return leg is a little more challenging - do you follow the shore or play the middle? I got mixed messages on this question. If you visit the Fremont YC website you'll find a short story outlining one strategy for this lake.

I would like to emphasize that everyone I have spoken to about Huntington has been very enthusiastic about this event; I therefore highly recommend it!

Doug McWilliams.

American Yacht Club has posted the NOR for theannual High Performance Dinghy regatta on October 8-9th. There is a rather amusing page about it on AYCs web site

Recent sightings

FDs have been seen sailing on Webster Lake in Webster, Massachusetts this summer, for the first time in many years. At least two FD are know to be sailing there, one of which is owned by IFDCAUS member Frank Sampson who has installed this nice dry sailing system at his water front home. The lake has an active racing association and there is talk of holding an FD meeting there in the future.

Other FD web news

The Spanish FD class association is one of the busiest in the World these days. They are expecting at least 20 boats at their Nationals later this month. They are actively recruiting and supporting new sailors and organizing events. Their web site http://www.fdesp.org/ has some excellent new historical and technical material. Well worth a look for anyone with some facility in Spannish, and plenty of good pictures.

FD News  23 APRIL 2005

The Dogwood Regatta on Lake Lanier Aprin 2nd and 3rd was a complete wash out due to a big storm system. Heavy rains and winds gusting into the 30s prevented any racing. Last year this event barely happened due to lack of wind. Maybe next year will be better.

In San Francisco, spring winds are putting a damper on FD sailing currently. The Nor Cal fleet are looking to visit some lakes for practice and racing.  Zhenya has boats and crews for anyoine who wants to particpate.

In New England the ice is off the lakes, but "docks in" is still a few weeks off.

The 2005 FD Racing Calender has been completely filled in now. Print it and hang it on your fridge. Entries in bold are recently added or updated.

Upcoming events

There are two interesting regatta coming up in region III in May. On the first Saturday there is the annual Mug Race, 22 miles down the St.Johns river hosted by the Jacksonville Rudder Club in north Florida . For information contact David Stage .
Later in the month on the 2st and 22nd, some FD sailors are planning to attend the Wooden Shoe regatta at the Concord YC near Knoxville Tennessee. The FD fleet was strong in Tennessee in the sixties and seventies, even supporting its own State Championship, complete with silver cup. The event at one time included FD, FJ and Windmill classes. This will be the first appearance of FDs in over 20 years. We have been saying that about of alot of events lately. For information about the regatta contact Randy Schonegen .

In San Francisco the same weekend, saturday and sunday , at least four teams are planning to attend a regatta at BVBC . Contact Zhenya if you want to participate.

After several years of talking about it, the FD fleet finally entered a NOOD regatta in San Diego. Eight FD teams appeared for two days of racing over the weekend of March 19-20. Despite forcast of rain storms the weather was just perfect, with winds 10-15 knots and partly cloudy skies.

Fifteen other classes were entered, sailing on four circles. The FDs sailed out of Coronado YC, with the Holder 20s and Ultimate 20s. There were also fleets of 505s and I-14s, one of which is owned by Don Meirzeski, who finished 2nd in his class.

FD NEWS  14 FEB 2005

January seems like ancient history now, but there were notable FD sailing events in Florida and California over the weekend of Jan 29-30

In St.Petersburg the FD midwinter regatta was held together with the Moth, Windmill and Snipe classes. Seven FDs participated. It was a fine weekend weatherwise. On Friday winds reached 24 knots and not many boats finished all three races. Saturday was lighter with winds in the 14-18 knot range, and sunday was lighter still, 7-10 knots. Several crews went home after friday, and the Hyatt's boat, being raced by two Australian visitors  lost both crew and skipper to the Gasparilla festival over in Tampa. That is a sort of Mardi Gras that goes on this weekend each year. On sunday Stan Hyatt himself appeared to take the helm of 219, but by then Paul Hemker had gone home due to damage to his boat, so seven FDs only raced in one of the eight races. Complete results can be found at Saint Petersburg Yacht Club's web site . Half of the sailors came from the North and were more than happy to see Florida sunshine after a particlurly nasty January.
midwinters sailors
left to right: Eric Boothe, Bill Bernard, John McMannus, Stan Hyatt, Bruce Barrett, Caryl Barrett, Pavel Ruzicka, Jonathan Clapp, Tim Sayles, Lin Robson.

At San Francisco's Bay View Boat Club on the same weekend thirteen sailors gathered around four boats to take part in a clinic called FD sailing 101. On Friday the 28th everyone gathered to set up the boats. There was a 25 knot breeze blowing from a passing storm and the Coast Guard was warning of squalls, so no one went out.
Saturday the 29th the day began at 9AM with a discussion of tacking  and a Q&A session. Then the boats were put in and everyone had a chance to practice tacking in nice 4-12 knot breeze. Afterwards Victor's birthday party was celebrated in the club with dinner and champagne.
Sunday's discussion and drills were about setting, gybing and dousing the spinnaker. Fortunately the wind never rose about 7 knots.

The Richmond Yacht club is having two dinghy regattas this year that the FD fleet might like to attend:
The Big Dinghy regatta in the spring (April 2-3) and Totally Dinghy in the fall (Sept 24-25). If you are interested in attending either of these events contact Zhenya so we can coordinate with the organizers.

Vlad Rivkin, birthday boy

The next west coast racing opportunity is coming up in San Diego:  the South Western NOOD regatta. The FD class has been invited to race and at this time at least seven teams are planning to attend.
The host of the event is the San Diego Yacht Club . The NOR is posted at the Sailing World site . Late fee applies to entries after March 3rd, sign up today if you are planning on attending.

Trapeze 148 was posted in January. Trapeze 149 is currently in preparation submissions to the editor by Feb 20th please.
