An FD is relatively easy to sail compared with other high performance dinghies but it is very challenging to extract maximum performance. Skill rather than money plays a much greater part in racing an FD successfully. Very substantial enjoyment can be obtained from an FD on a low budget. There is a very wide range of differences in the quality and cost of maintenance of the FDs listed below. The FD underwent a radical change in the early 1980s in that composite hulls became the norm. In general composite hulls require significantly less maintenance than most wooden FDs and are much more durable. In some sailing conditions old wooden FDs are just as fast as more modern FDs and it is not necessary to spend large amounts of money to race FDs successfully. It is strongly recommended that prospective purchasers have a sail in as many FDs as possible. By attending an FD open meeting, examples of FDs of different construction, age and layout of controls can be seen which can act as a yardstick when considering a purchase. The range and age of sails, spars, the layout of the fittings and whether a road trailer and trolley are included should be taken into account when assessing value for money. The FD Class recommends that prospective purchasers consider any purchase very carefully, join the FD Class Association and consult with the Class Secretary so as to increase the chance that they buy an FD of a construction, age and cost appropriate to their needs. In addition to the FDs
available for sale in the UK, prospective purchasers might like to consider a
visit to the continent, in particular Germany, where dozens of FDs race on a
wide range of lakes each weekend in the summer. |

I am currently restoring a Bob Hoare boat from 1976 No. K-300. The goal is to have the boat as representative of a state of the art 1976 timber boat in as great detail as possible. I am looking for a number of original or similar items, including shroud winches, a Technik Ratchet genoa furler, jam cleats and blocks (inc ratchet blocks) from that era, Holt Allen nylon bailers etc. Sails as well of course! All help and suggestions gratefully received. Andrew Hurst Seahorse Magazine Tel (44) (0)1590-671898 |
